Privacy Policy
Your data, your choice.
ProteinWise works without an account. If you sign in, your log, saved products and scans can sync to your account. No advertising and no tracking across apps and websites.
Information the app accesses
The camera scans barcodes. If you choose, it also photographs Nutrition Facts, ingredient lists, menus or meals. Label photos for a product that isn't found stay on this iPhone and are removed when you finish or cancel, unless you turn on Add this product to ProteinWise for that label.
With your permission, ProteinWise writes the protein and calories you log to Apple Health and reads your latest body weight to suggest a daily protein target. Your body weight stays on this iPhone. Health data is never used for advertising and is not sent to a ProteinWise server.
Notifications are optional and local: the weekly recap is made on this iPhone from your own log.
Using ProteinWise without an account
Scanning, scores, rankings, swaps, Compare, the Today log, whole foods and share cards all work without an account. Without an account, your scans, log, saved products, shopping list, prices, goal and target stay on this iPhone.
Accounts and sync
An account is optional. You can sign in with Apple, Google or email. Email accounts stay on this iPhone.
When you sign in with Apple or Google and sync is available, the app sends that provider's sign-in token to the ProteinWise service, which creates a ProteinWise account. The service stores an account id, the email the provider shares (Apple may share a private relay address), the first name you give, a random install id, and the records you sync: your saved products, your scan history and your Today log (foods, servings, protein, calories and the quality figures shown in the app). Body weight, your target, the shopping list and prices are not synced.
The service runs on Vercel (functions) and Supabase (database and storage) in the United States. They process the data only to run the service.
Sign in with Apple also sends Apple's authorization code to the service so it can ask Apple to revoke the sign-in when you delete your account.
Invites
If you share an invite, your invite code is tied to your account. When a friend redeems it, the service records the friend's account and install id so a reward is given once, and records when the friend finishes a first scan. Rewards are Pro time only.
Pro subscriptions
Purchases are handled by Apple. When you are signed in, the app sends the App Store's signed transaction to the service so Pro and earned Pro days follow your account. ProteinWise never sees your payment details.
Photos you choose to send
Add this product to ProteinWise: the label photos, the text read from them and the fields you checked are uploaded for review, linked to your account. Photos are re-encoded before upload, which removes location data. Reviewers may approve the product for the catalog; an approved product can show the credit name you entered.
Meal photos (Pro): the photo is sent to the ProteinWise service and from there to an AI vision provider (Anthropic) to suggest foods and portions. It is not stored after the suggestion is returned. Nothing is logged until you check each food.
Barcode lookup (Open Food Facts)
A scanned barcode may be sent to Open Food Facts at world.openfoodfacts.org to look up a packaged product, without an account id, name or email. USDA branded-food snapshots are bundled in the app.
Optional usage sharing
Share anonymous usage is off by default. When on, the app keeps a log of feature events (for example result viewed or card shared) with the day they happened, which you can export or clear in Profile. When sync is available, those events are sent with a random id that is not your account id. They never include barcodes, product names, label text, photos or your account.
Help grow the catalog is off by default. When on, a barcode that isn't found is sent with the time, and nothing else.
Links to stores
Some product pages may link to a store. If ProteinWise earns a commission from such a link, the page says so. Scores never depend on it.
Retention and deletion
Delete account deletes your ProteinWise service account and everything stored with it (synced records, invites, contributions and their photos, Pro mirror), then removes the on-device account, history, Today log, saved products, shopping list, prices, usage log, search recents, goals, correction notes and cached lookups. One exception: if you redeemed an invite, the install id stays with the invite record, without your account, so the same iPhone can't redeem again. For Google, the app also disconnects Google; for Apple, it asks Apple to revoke the sign-in. Sign out ends the session on this iPhone and stops sync; it does not delete anything.
What ProteinWise does not do
No advertising, no tracking across apps and websites, no sale of personal information. ProteinWise does not access your contacts, calendar, microphone or location.
Children's privacy
ProteinWise is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If the app's data practices change, this policy is updated before those changes take effect, and the effective date above is revised.
